Three Zim journalists die in one day
HARARE, Zimbabwe - Union of Journalists, ZUJ, Secretary-General Foster Dongozi has described the deaths of three veteran journalists, King Dube, Salatiel Mutasa and Orirando Manwere as a blow to the media industry.
Dube and Manwere passed on in Harare at St Anne’s and West End hospitals respectively on Monday, while Mutasa succumbed to diabetes at Masvingo Hospital on the same day.
“This is a very difficult period for the media industry and for me personally,” said Dongozi.
“I had the privilege to work and interact with these three seasoned journalists on different platforms and fondly cherish their work ethic and professionalism.”
Dongozi said it was unfortunate that death had robbed the media industry three experienced scribes within 24 hours.
“It’s indeed a major blow to the media industry,” Dongozi said. “The gap that these three astute media practitioners have left will be difficult to fill.”
Foster said the late practitioners made immeasurable various contributions to the profession in the quest for better working conditions.
“Dube, Mutasa and Manwere were committed to the strengthening of the Union’s operations and prioritized the cause for improved livelihoods for journalists. The year 2012 has not been kind to us as it has already robbed us of other journalists such as Makuwerere Bwititi, Bornwell Chakaodza and Freedom Moyo” said Dongozi.
Dube is a former news producer and presenter at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation (ZBC), where he also produced several dramas.
He was 47. At the time of his death, Dube was a Co-Director of Video Audio Network.
Among other media organizations, Manwere worked for the Zimbabwe Independent, Sunday News and at the time of his death was the Communications Officer at the National Aids Council (NAC).
Mutasa served at Ziana, Chronicle and New Ziana in various editorial positions. He was the editor of Masvingo Star at the time of his death.
