Zambian song bird Anna Mwale accused of stealing chickens
Zambia’s international song bird and Diva, Anna Mwale was yesterday rushed to Coptic Hospital in Lusaka after fainting at central police where she was being interrogated on allegations of stealing 3,000 chickens.
Police say the 50-year-old singer who is now believed to be in stable condition, fainted due to suspected high blood pressure which they say could have been caused during interrogation.
The Zambian song bird whose hit song "Excuse me" rocked the Zambian scene in the 80s is said to have been involved in poultry rearing in Lusaka West with the help of her uncle who now claims to have been swindled.
According to Anna’s relative who declined to be named in this story, the singer who is currently based in Germany came home recently on her regular visit to explore business opportunities with her husband Michael Hahn.
The source told LT that Anna who is staying in Makeni area entered into a deal with her uncle of Lusaka West to rear 3,000 chickens at his farm.
"Recently Anna went there to check on the progress of her chickens and she was told that all the 3000 birds had ran away at night, that’s how an investigation was launched and the manager in charge was arrested."
The source said upon seeing the manager being arrested, Anna’s uncle then reported the missing chickens to a different police station and named Anna as the first suspect.
"So it seems the police told him to go to court and the court letter issued an arrest warrant against Anna who was not aware of the court case.Yesterday, police came to Makeni and picked Anna up we thought they wanted to give her a report on their findings over the missing chickens but when she got there, she was being questioned for stealing her own chickens," said the source.
A check at Lusaka Central Police yesterday found Anna in the company of her sister being taken inside the police station.
However when Anna fainted during interrogations, police whisked her away to Coptic Hospital using the back door.
A check at Coptic found Anna being attended to with medical officers giving assurance that she was out of danger.
Anna complained about the turnaround of events and wondered how she could possibly have stolen her own chickens.
The singer who has now clocked 30 years in music is the founder of the family singing group called Mwale Sisters.
Although she has not recently released an album, she has maintained great influence on her sisters’ singing careers back home.
